This is my second read of this book. I read the paperback when it was originally published in 1993 and now I did the re-read of the Author's Cut Kindle version. If I didn't love it the first time I would have never read it a second time. So that should say it all.

Straight-laced Madeline Avery is intent on making a home for her family in the rough Dakota Territory town of Deadwood and she's bringing her stiff-backed ladylike ideas with her. Let's just say she has some rude awakenings.

Daniel "Fox" Matthews' soul is torn between what his conscience and heart tell him and what his country and the people of Deadwood expect. He hides a secret that could break him and everything he holds dear.

Through a mission of mercy, Maddie and Fox find themselves while living amongst the Lakota people. Maddie slowly loosens her high ideals and comes to actually prefer the free life of Lakota. Something Fox already preferred from his years with them. Do they stay in the Lakota village and watch while the Native Americans' life is chipped away by the gold and land hungry whites? Or, do they take their chances in Deadwood, knowing Fox's secret could be found out?

A lovely look at the Lakota people and their doomed struggle to maintain their land and dignity amidst the heartwarming discovery and bloom of love between Maddie and Fox.

For me, having Native American roots, I appreciate that Ms. Wright showed the pride and determination the Lakota people. Thank you.

In a Renegade Embrace Rogues Go West Book 2 edition by Cynthia Wright Romance eBooks Reviews

With the ups and downs of Fire Blossom, it was one great read and truly worth five stars from me. The formality of Maddie and the life and times of Fox, there were times I wanted to just smash their heads together to bring some sense to their thinking. However, my understanding of Fox and his hesitations did make it a little easier to digest although there were still times that I just didn't like him. This book raised many emotions and I just wanted them to get together and have a great life; call me the forever ROMANTIC. Cynthia Wright knows how to pull your heart strings and still leave you asking for more. I liked the way she wrote using history in this story and kept it moving. How she used Fox and his experience was great and how she wrote Maddie's half-sister into it was a fist raiser/high-five in the end. Love it and can't wait to read more of Cynthia Wright's books. If you like history, romance and westerns, this book is for you and if you don't like westerns, read it from the historical perspective and give this book a chance; I think you will like it in the end.
Maddie and her family move to Deadwood which is quite a departure from Philadelphia which is where they are from. Deadwood is full of all kinds of wild people especially in the badlands part of the town. Maddie's family moves out a little ways off the beaten trail where things are a little more calm and settled. She meets Fox the day that he brings her brother home as he found Benjamin wandering around the badlands. This begins a growing attraction to the mysterious man next door, as Fox decides to build a home for himself next door to Maddie's home.

Fox is haunted by a secret from the events that happened a few months before at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He was working for the president under General Custer. Up until the last few moments before the battle began as he argued one too many times with Custer about what he was about to do, Custer dismissed him from his regiment. But as he only did this moments before the battle began, most people would assume he'd deserted. While all of the members of the batallion under George Custer were killed, the ones led by the other two men did have survivors. If one of those soldiers ever finds Daniel Matthews(his real name) he's afraid of what the consequences could be since he has not proof he's deserted. Which is why he's been hiding out in Deadwood. It's a remote enough spot that news travels very slow and with all of the wild characters inhabiting the town, it's a perfect place to live at the moment. But what he didn't count on at all was becoming attracted to the young woman next door and he tries to fight his growing feelings for her, as what kind of future can he give her if he's trying to hide his identity.

But what happens when Maddie tricks her way on to a journey with Fox and can he continue to ignore his feelings for her when they are together all of the time. Does he send her home or does he continue on the trip her father sent him on? What happens while they are away and spending time amongst the Lakota Indians? Is Fox able to finally let go of some of his demons? Even if he makes peace with himself what about his secret? Can he really have a future with Maddie even with such a secret hanging over his head? Did he possibly make a big mistake when he was still fighting his feelings for Maddie when he tried to set her up with a man that he thought would be more suitable for her?

If you are a fan of history, historical fiction, romance novels and westerns you may enjoy this book as it's very well written book and even includes some historical figures like Wild Bill Hilcock and Calamity Jane who make brief appearances in the book. I've now read a few books by Cynthia Wright and if they are as well written and entertaining as this one, I'm sure I'll continue to read more in the future.
This book is the exception to my preconceived notions. I usually stay far, far away from any books with a Western theme. It's simply that my personal preference are Historical Romance.
However, when choosing what to read I always note a books star rating and more importantly how many people have taken their time to contribute their opinion.
If it has a significantly high rating, then I read the full description and am hooked. Always remain open and you may stumble upon a great plot, incredible twists & turns and unforgettable characters. That's what happened with "A Renegade's Embrace".
So much so that I'll find any other " Western Rebels Books " out there!
